FACTS ABOUT SCARS:
Almost everyone has at least one scar on their body. Scars are a normal part of the healing process of the skin. Usually scars are not harmful or dangerous. However, scars may grow rapidly, may become painful, may interfere with normal bodily functions, and may be cosmetically displeasing or even disfiguring. The size and location of the scar plays a big factor in whether or not a scar is problematic. The good news is that most scars can be treated to reduce its size or improve its appearance.
A scar is caused by collagen formation by the skin in response to inflammation, trauma, or surgery. The skin is trying to heal itself and produces collagen to repair the damage. In some cases, the skin may produce excessive collagen and form a raised scar that does not extend beyond the original boundaries of the injury (called a hypertrophic scar), or a thickened, growing scar that can extend beyond the original boundaries of injury (called a keloid scar).
